BIG BROTHER WATCH: ILLINOIS launches compulsory mental health screening for children and pregnant women

"The American tradition of parents deciding what is best for their children is, yet again, under attack.  The pharmaceutical industry has convinced President Bush to support mandatory mental-health screening for every child in America, including preschool children, and the industry is now working to convince Congress as well.  But mandatory screening alone is not what the pharmaceutical industry wants.  The real payoff for the drug companies is the forced drugging of children that will result – as we learned tragically with Ritalin – even when parents refuse."

UC Berkeley linguistics professor George Lakoff talks about how transforming the language of politics can help win the good fight.

And in his introduction to Lakoff's book, AlterNet's

New Evidence : Bush Misleads on Prison Abuse Scandal

...investigative journalist Seymour Hersh of the New Yorker told the American Civil Liberties Union this week that videotapes were made of young boys being sodomized at Abu Ghraib. "The worst is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking," the reporter told the group's convention. Hersh reports there was "a massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there, and higher." See the video of Hersh's ACLU speech7 - the information about the prison comes at about 1 hour and 30 minutes in.

Watch the video (Sy Hersh starts at about 1:06)

MoveOn Works the Hollywood Spotlight to Amplify Its Voice

Attorney General John Ashcroft has repeatedly rebuffed requests by Congress and public interest groups for basic information about how the Patriot Act is being used. Now – in a cynical public relations ploy – Ashcroft has released a thirty-page piece of propaganda wrapped in the guise of public disclosure. The document does not contain information needed for members of Congress to make an informed decision about whether to extend provisions which expire in 2005. Instead, it avoids key issues, distorts basic law and presents a self-serving selection of Patriot Act "successes." Sign the petition calling for the removal of John Ashcroft.

Rather than just giving us some shallow alternative to the Bush-bashing Dixie Chicks and John Mellencamp, Parton shows her class on this album by avoiding politics and instead celebrating God, our men and women in uniform, and the nation that loves them... Again, Joseph Goebbels would be proud. Read the whole psycho right wing rant...

More Stalinesque Tactics: "Bush campaign staffers apparently were trying to ensure a friendly crowd for his speech. Some Democrats and independent voters in line were turned away when they admitted they weren't sure they were going to vote for Bush."

THE PATRIOT'S ACT: WHAT'S MORE AMERICAN THAN ASKING QUESTIONS? -- by Michael Moore

Joseph Goebbels would be proud of the American propaganda anointment utensil some here refer to as the "liberal" media... give me a break. Does anybody watch this crap anymore? Why would the Bush administration fear Saddam Hussein's testimony?

Cheney wasn't just telling Senator Leahy to "Go F*** Yourself." His real audience was us, the citizens of America.

"If the president's speeches to the nation about his decision to go to war had received a significant fraction of the journalistic attention that Moore's film has, it's a good bet 5,600 American soldiers would sill be enjoying their release from the military—rather than being called back to duty to carry out an increasingly chaotic and counterproductive occupation."
